The History of Bathampton

Bathampton has been a settlement for five thousand years, and has been known as Caer Badon, Hanton, Bathentuna, Hampton, and Bath Hampton. There is still evidence visible to the casual onlooker of Celtic field systems, Roman and subsequent quarrying, and pre-Reformation monastic fishponds.

But the village’s historical claim to fame is more unusual. In 1897, an art teacher named William Harbutt was experimenting with various substances in an attempt to create a clay for his sculpture students that would not dry. The exact composition of the substance he came up with is a closely guarded secret, but from 1900 until 1983, Plasticine was made only by the Harbutt Company in Bathampton.
