Description

A wonderful, early Manor House, partly Jacobean and believed to date in part from the late 14th Century. Listed Grade II* as being of special Architectural and Historic Interest, it is certainly the most significant house in this extremely popular village.

As one would expect, the Manor House has a comprehensive range of period features which include stone inglenook fireplaces, decorative panelling, stone mullioned windows and oak beams.

Entering via the front door, you come into an entrance lobby and then straight through to the kitchen. A quarry tiled floor is combined with a good range of hand built units which have marble insets, ideal for food...

A quarry tiled floor is combined with a good range of hand built units which have marble insets, ideal for food preparation. There are windows to both the front with views to the south of the village and to the rear. There is a cream oil fired AGA and steps lead you down to a pantry area and a useful utility room.

Steps also lead down from the kitchen to a very large reception room which could be used either as a play room or a home office. The room is west facing and has an excellent range of four fitted cupboards and bookshelves; one of the double cupboards houses the oil fired boiler.

To the far side of the kitchen is a wonderful panelled dining room gentrified in the later part of the 18th Century. This has a stone fireplace with painted timber bolection moulded surround fitted with cast iron ducknest grate and original Delft tile inserts. Stairs lead up from the kitchen lobby to two breathtaking Jacobean reception rooms which are a centrepiece of the house.

The principal drawing room has some amazing carved oak panels above the doorway and a concealed Priest hole. A large, old door (possibly originally used as the main entrance) leads out to a porch and to the inner courtyard garden. A substantial inglenook fireplace and the stone
mullioned windows make this a superb room. This then leads through to a second sitting room, which is completely panelled in oak and, again, has a fi ne period feel with its fireplace with carved overmantel above (please historical note). Also off the main drawing room is a cloakroom. A further large oak panelled door leads to the main staircase. The banisters and treads of the staircase are of particular note, again being very early with barley twist spindles. This leads to the first and second floors.

On the first floor there are two very large principal bedrooms. The master bedroom overlooks the side garden and rear courtyard and has its own en suite fitted with Villeroy & Boch sanitary ware and the front bedroom enjoys a double aspect with south and west facing windows. Both rooms have delightful stone fireplaces. To the eastern end of the house are two further double bedrooms, one being en suite and there is a family bathroom. Please note that the secondary staircase leads down to the front door lobby.

On the top floor you are greeted by a superb split level arrangement. To the very top is a wonderful music room with double bedroom off; both rooms have amazing beams and are filled with light. An attractive oak floored hallway leads you down to a further bedroom and a shower room, again fitted with Villeroy & Boch sanitary ware.

Outside

From the kitchen a door leads out to the walled courtyard which is a great place for summer dining. To your right is a very useful outbuilding which used to be the old bakery. This could make a superb gym or even home office. On from here, there are several other outbuildings which include a stable, hayloft and coach house right by the iron gates out to the lane. These iron gates carry the initial “H” for the Hungerford family (please see historical note).

The main courtyard area is beautifully walled (Grade II listed) and has a gateway through to the west facing walled side garden which is well stocked and mainly laid to lawn. A gateway from the top of the courtyard leads to the main gravelled parking area, sufficient for a number of vehicles, and the driveway that leads down to a five bar gate and the lane. To the side of the driveway you find the oil tank.

There is a large area of over an acre which could be used as a paddock or great for families.

Of particular note and certainly the finest we have ever come across is the thatched dovecote, inside of which the original design is still in place. This is also Grade II* listed.
