Description

East Wing is certainly an exceptional house. It has been subject to a very sensitive and impressive refurbishment which amongst other things has included re plumbing and re wiring the house. East Wing is certainly an exceptional house. It has been subject to a very sensitive and impressive refurbishment which amongst other things has included re plumbing and re wiring the house. The house dates in part to the 18th Century with Victorian additions and provides well balanced accommodation in the most part across two floors.

Entering the house via the front door, you are greeted by an inner lobby with a delightful small stained glass window leading to a welcoming entrance hall. The hall has wide planked oak floor boards, a marble fireplace and the staircase taking you to the upper floors. In front of you, steps take you down to a fine sitting room and snug with a beautiful large arched sash window, a Bath stone fireplace and wood burning stove. Either side of the fireplace are two period fitted cupboards. Our clients use this room as a cosier snug.

The hallway leads to a further reception room which faces the front of the house which makes a perfect playroom and TV room for families. The hall then leads onto the drawing room, which is the centre piece of the house; a superb room with a bay window to one end and French doors out to the gardens with wonderful views beyond. There is an attractive marble corbel fireplace, fine cornicing and a central rose. There are concealed shutters to the whole bay window.

Down two steps you reach the spacious kitchen/breakfast room. It is both light and airy with a pitch roof with exposed timbers and French doors straight out to the garden. There is a superb hand crafted kitchen from reclaimed timbers ad zinc worktops, an Aga ( electric) , 5 ring gas hob ( from cylinders) and a further conventional oven and dishwasher. In several locations there are wonderful stone carved friezes, originally from a church or abbey. To one end there is a good size larder. Glazed double doors lead through to an excellent boot room where a back door leads out to the front drive. There is also a sweet little downstairs cloakroom with stained glass window.

Also off the main hall is a doorway which takes you down to a spacious cellar. To the far end the main room provides a laundry room and also houses the new plumbing system which includes a recently fitted Worcester Bosch boiler / pressurised water system and water softner. There is a good sized wine store with original wine bins.

First Floor

You are greeted by a substantial landing which is Scandinavian in feel. Off this first level you find bedroom 3 with amazing revealed plaster walls and views to the south over the gardens. Steps lead up to a master bedroom, facing south again to the wonderful views, it has plenty of fitted storage and its own stylish en suite bathroom with shower and bath . Bedroom 2 also has a good range of fitted cupboards and to one side a door leads to a wet room with another wonderful stained glass window. From here steps lead up to a fourth bedroom, again with built-in storage and a lovely timber panelled wall.

THE COTTAGE

Formally a coach house, the building provides excellent ancillary accommodation. On the ground floor is a fitted kitchen with electric oven and dishwasher and a sitting room with French doors to the garden and a Georgian period stone fireplace. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms and a shower room. Attached to one side is a very useful store.

THE GARDEN

To the front of the house are attractive stone pillars; one is gated and leads to the front door and the other is open to a good sized gravel driveway. A timber gate leads between the house and the cottage to a beautiful south facing stone terrace. The gardens are mainly laid to lawn. A majestic horse chestnut tree stands to one side. In general, the whole feel of the gardens and views are really very special.

THE STUDIO

To the Eastern side of the garden is a beautiful studio house in a charming pavilion style. Our client’s use it as as a home office but it could make a great den for older children . It has fine timber flooring and a wood burning stove.
